Sergei Loznitsa’s pitch-black political film is set in Eastern Ukraine and won him a best director award in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard. The topics of propaganda and post-truth identity loom large in the movie, which opens with actors in a war zone being prepared for a false TV item. It takes the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces and creates a film about a senseless war and the impact it has had.
A companion piece to A Gentle Creature, Loznitsa's latest film is a howl of rage and anger - it's a haunting brutal film.Gráinne Humphreys, Festival Director
