Santosh
Sandhya Suri
A government scheme sees newly widowed Santosh (Shahana Goswami) inherit her husband’s job as a police constable in the rural badlands of Northern India. After the murder of a low-caste girl, Santosh is taken under the wing of charismatic feminist inspector Geeta Sharma (Sunita Rajwar) and the pair challenges the patriarchal and casteist attitudes underlining the investigation. Shot over a mere 45 days, Suri’s narrative feature debut is dark and detailed, and acted with admirable subtlety. After premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, Santosh went on to win Best Screenplay at the British Independent Film Awards.
