Genius Loci (16m)

Director: Adrien Merigeau

The city is dynamic, continuous and metamorphic, and Reine is searching for both the answer and its question. Director Adrien Merigeau was inspired by a group of artists whom he met in Kilkenny to create this abstraction which is never what you think it is. Winner of awards at Annecy, Berlin, Glas and many more festivals, Genius Loci has a rich and eclectic aesthetic, ablaze with shapes and colours of all kinds. This 16-minute short is a film that you welcome with open arms, and in return, it welcomes you into its own superabundant world.

The Triplets of Belleville (1h 20m)

Director: Sylvain Chomet

When Madame Souza’s cyclist grandson, Champion, is kidnapped during the Tour de France and taken to the US, she embarks on a transatlantic journey with her paunchy pooch Bruno and teams up with the Belleville sisters – an aged song and dance team from the 30s – to rescue him. Chomet’s 2003 feature is a darling of a film, existing somewhere between sophistication and silliness. Its vintage postcard-style animation lovingly enhances the idiosyncrasies and whimsy of its plot and characters, and the film becomes a warm, comforting hug that is simultaneously new and familiar.
