Matthias Glasner
The Lunies family haven't been a family for a long time. Lissy (Corinna Harfouch) is quietly happy about her demented husband Gerd (Hans-Uwe Bauer) slowly wasting away in a home, but she doesn't have much time left herself. A conductor in his early 40s, son Tom (Lars Eidinger) is being made the surrogate father of his ex-girlfriend's child, and Tom's sister Ellen starts an affair with a married man, with whom she shares a love for alcohol. As Death turns up on the doorstep, these estranged family members meet again. Glasner's Berlin film walks the tightrope between the meaning of life and the beginning of death. Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, it is tragically poignant and utterly hilarious.
