When two girls go missing, Paul Chartier (Anthony Bajon), a young police recruit, is assigned to 'Maldoror', a secret unit set up to monitor a dangerous sex offender. After legal constraints derail the operation, a frustrated and obsessed Chartier embarks on a solitary hunt to bring down the perpetrator. This film, which screened at Venice Film Festival, is a realistic and evocative piece of fiction inspired by the judicial scandal surrounding Belgian serial killer and child molester Marc Dutroux. Through Chartier's quest for justice, Du Welz explores the dark nature of evil and the powerlessness experienced in the face of institutional dysfunction.
