Sister Midnight
Karan Kandhari
Gopal (Ashok Pathak) and Uma (Radhika Apte) have just had an arranged marriage. Gopal is soft-spoken and utterly shy, while Uma cannot cook nor manage a domestic budget. In short, both are ill-suited to this arrangement. Their relationship spirals into darkness as Uma discovers a strange and feral psychosis within herself in this debut Cannes feature. Kandhari’s Mumbai-based marriage movie is a carefully calculated comedy about patriarchal values and gender roles in working-class India. It is as bold and bawdy as its protagonist but still manages to evoke great sympathy for its flawed characters.
