Lotte Reiniger
Premiering in Germany in 1926, this is the world's oldest surviving feature-length animated film. After three years, 96,000 frames, 250,000 images, and several meticulously cut characters and backgrounds, a marvel of fantasy and cinematic movement was born. Reiniger, who was only 23 at the time, used a silhouette animation technique to bring life to a set of stories, including 'Aladdin' and 'The Ebony Horse', from One Thousand and One Nights. This was also one of the first films to portray queer love with an openly gay couple. This is a film that shines in its animating excellence and delights in its artistic creativity.
