Emerging filmmaker Max Walker-Silverman follows up his acclaimed feature film debut A Love Song (2022) with his poignant and life-affirming second film in Rebuilding. Set in the aftermath of a catastrophic wildfire that consumes his 200-acre ranch and all his possessions, Dusty (Josh O’Conner) is forced to relocate with what he has left to a community support camp in a refurbished mobile home. Dusty must confront his relationships with those around him including his ex-wife, mother in law and estranged daughter as well as his new neighbours who have also lost their homes in the devastating wildfire.
Walker-Silverman tows the line between realism and sentiment. Demonstrated visually through beautifully photographed views of breathtaking natural landscapes contrasted with the scorched trees and enclosed intimacy of the mobile home interiors. The remains of Dusty’s ranch are a constant reminder of what he has lost along with the memories it once held. The films success hinges on the relationship between Dusty and his daughter Callie Rose. O’Conner expectantly delivers a thoughtful and introspective performance, while unexpected scene stealing newcomer Lily LaTorre manages to provide needed brevity mixed with unabashed earnestness. The pair’s shared scenes are the emotional backbone throughout the film and an absolute joy to watch.
The supporting cast is just as strong, with particular highlight to Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis and brief but impactful appearances from Amy Madiggan.

Walker-Silverman storytelling demonstrates restraint. Much of the films power is in what’s left unsaid. The script avoids descending into miserable melodrama nor becomes enamoured with unbridled optimism. The losses aren't ignored or sensationalised, but instead the attention is driven towards the collective strength of community support and the little acts of kindness that help us along the way.
Rebuilding reminds us that no matter what stage of life we are at we will all suffer loss. Whether it be a loved one, our possessions or even our memories. And while it may hurt and no matter the toll it can take we will find a way to strive forward. We will persevere. We will rebuild.
